Matthew Susin is a lifelong public servant, educator, and community leader with more than two decades of experience in education, public policy, and civic engagement. Elected to the School Board in 2016, Mr. Susin has focused on student safety, workforce development, and innovative education policy.
A graduate of Florida State University with dual majors in Political Science and History, he was inducted into Phi Sigma Alpha and completed a legislative internship with the Florida House of Representatives. He began his career at Greenberg Traurig as a Legislative Coordinator representing major national clients.
Before joining the School Board, Mr. Susin spent nearly a decade as an award‑winning high school social studies teacher in Brevard County, earning honors including the National Jefferson Award for Public Service, Walmart Teacher of the Year, the VFW Citizenship Education Teacher Award (State and National), and Brevard County Social Studies Teacher of the Year.
As a School Board member, Mr. Susin has led several first‑in‑the‑nation initiatives, including Florida’s first mandatory EKG/ECG screenings for student‑athletes and the statewide adoption of CPR certification as a graduation requirement. He also played a major role in workforce development, chairing the Certified Production Technician Program and helping launch Florida’s largest high school student jobs program, now modeled nationally.
Beyond education, Mr. Susin helped secure passage of the All American Flag Act, requiring U.S. flags on government property to be American‑made. He serves in numerous leadership roles, including with the Florida School Boards Association, the Space Coast Economic Development Council, and Rotary International, where he has helped raise significant funds for student support, disaster relief, and global clean water efforts.
Recognized as School Board Member of the Year for creating the nation’s largest student vocational rehabilitation jobs program, Mr. Susin has also been honored as Public Servant of the Year, Humanitarian of the Year, and Advocate of the Year. At his core, he is driven to serve students and strengthen communities through public policy, education, and action.
